Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) – the basics

We all know that life brings changes, and now is as good a time as any to plan for such a time where you may become ill or mentally impaired during your lifetime. That doesn’t just mean getting old.

If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, have a stroke, or even suffer from premature mental disease, you are likely to want someone you trust to help you with your affairs.

When you create a Lasting Power of Attorney, you can choose whether you want to give someone else the authority to deal with your financial affairs and / or your health care if you become unable to make decisions later in your life.

Why would I need a Power of Attorney?
If you become unable to make your own decisions and do not have a Power of Attorney, the Office of the Public Guardian becomes the guardian of your property. This is an expensive and time consuming process and, chances are, it would not be what you would choose if you had planned in time.

  What do I do next?

If you would like to know more about whether a Lasting Power of Attorney is for you, we would be delighted to speak with you and discuss your options in more detail.

None of us can predict the future, but we can plan a little better for it...
